I've been doing quite a bit of thinking lately about my name, my son's name, and the process that I go through to choose my characters names. In a surprisingly related discussion at [livejournal.com profile] brigits_flame  the topic of names and whether or not you're happy with your name came up. Which got me to thinking...

Are you happy with your name? Does it suit you? More importantly, would your characters be happy with their names? Do they fit their name at the beginning of the story? What about at the end?

Choose a current project you have in that pile of projects, and take your favourite main character and look their name up. Any baby name website can help you with that, my favourite is babynames.com. Does the meaning fit your character? Would your character rename themselves if they could?

Leave a comment and tell us.

Sprints will be open tonight from 7p CST to 9p CST. You know the rest.

If not, LJ mail me and I'll give you the info.

Prompt

Jan. 29th, 2009 01:23 pm
[identity profile] alabasterfalcon.livejournal.com
Write a scene about what happens when a character you're working gets trapped inside a car for two hours after a terrible car accident.

Purpose: Get to know your character.

Note: If your character doesn't live in a time where cars exsit, modify the mode of transportation. "My character wouldn't get into a car accident." is not a valid response. If they don't drive, make them a passenger. If they ride horses, they get stuck under one. If a space ship, make it a spacecraft crash, if they're in a submarine, they get stuck under a fallen pipe or something. Be creative. You're a writer.

For Monday's prompt, we have The Minor Character Prompt.

It's nearing the end of NaNo (Can we say "uh-oh"?), and though it may seem like your novel is wrapping up, throwing in a random minor character is the perfect thing to boost your word count.

This week's minor character is:

A slightly obsessive shopkeeper with an interesting "birthmark".

You know what to do, darlings. Is this character a he? A she? Neither? Is the birthmark even truly a birthmark? How do your characters meet this person? Is it a one time thing, or does this character reappear? Are they good or bad? Neutral?

Am I asking far too many questions?
