Well, now that LJ's back up, I can finally post this.  It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for your word of the week!

I was hiking the other day and saw a gorgeous monarch butterfly (at least I think it was a monarch...) fluttering back and forth in front of the waterfall.  So on a related note, today's word is:

Cocoon

Most frequently known as a noun:
1 a : an envelope often largely of silk which an insect larva forms about itself and in which it passes the pupa stage
   b
: any of various other protective coverings produced by animals
2 a : something suggesting a cocoon especially in providing protection or in producing isolation

b : a protective covering placed or sprayed over military or naval equipment in storage

It's also seen as a verb: to wrap or envelop in or as if in a cocoon.

When winter comes, I'm a fan of the cocoon of blankets I tend to make for myself... perhaps your characters find some safety or warmth from their own cocoon?  Or if you're writing fantasy, perhaps your new species will go through their own pupa stage.  How will you use "cocoon" in your story?

Time for another Wednesday word!  I'm pretty sure I had an interesting one in mind earlier with lots of different definitions, but I seem to have forgotten it.  Perhaps I'll remember for next week?

In the meantime:

Default

This comes down to two different sets of definitions.  On one hand, there's the computer-related autopilot-type definition:
Noun:  a : a selection made usually automatically or without active consideration due to lack of a viable alternative <remained the club's president by default>
b
: a selection automatically used by a computer program in the absence of a choice made by the user
Verb:   to make a default selection

Or, if you're in the US, you've been hearing a lot about this one lately:
1: failure to do something required by duty or law
2: a failure to pay financial debts
3a : failure to appear at the required time in a legal proceeding,  b : failure to compete in or to finish an appointed contest
(verb):
: to fail to fulfill a contract, agreement, or duty

So, are your characters in financial trouble?  Or are they filled with so much apathy that they go with the default option?

It's Wednesday!  Happy Hump Day everyone!

Your word this week is:

Wedge

My housemate's cat is called Wedge, because she likes to fit herself into small places.  (Actually, it's after a Star Wars character, but it fits anyway.)

Wedge can be used as a noun or a verb:
n. : a piece of a substance (as wood or iron) that tapers to a thin edge and is used for splitting wood and rocks, raising heavy bodies, or for tightening by being driven into something
(et al.)

v. : to fasten or tighten by driving in a wedge
2a : to force or press (something) into a narrow space : cram b : to force (one's way) into or through
3: to separate or force apart with or as if with a wedge

So perhaps your characters are wedged between a rock and a hard place?  Or maybe they're driving the wedge between some key pieces of your puzzle.  How will you use this idea?

The goal of this post is to possibly get unstuck in your novel or provide inspiration!

I dare you to insert this into your novel!

Include in at least three scenes a light switch that, when flipped, does not affect the light it's supposed to in any manner. It can do anything else you want it to (up to and including operating lights the next galaxy over), so long as the light stays on/off/whatever it is at the moment.

Whoops, this was meant to go up this morning!  Oh well.  Your Wednesday Word this week is:

Avatar

A word that has had quite a bit of publicity in past years due to both Avatar: the Last Airbender and Avatar (the 3D movie), it has several meanings (from merriam-webster.com):

1: the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu)
2a : an incarnation in human form b : an embodiment (as of a concept or philosophy) often in a person
3: a variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity
4: an electronic image that represents and is manipulated by a computer user (as in a computer game)

What does it represent for you?  I challenge you to include the idea of an avatar in your story.

Every Wednesday during April I will be posting a random picture. Sometimes it will be of nature, sometimes food, sometimes it will just be of something completely unrelated to anything else.
